Compulsory education in the UAE begins from Grade 1 and the academic year runs from September to June, except for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools which runs from April to March.
There is an accepted age range for each school grade/year and your chosen school should be able to give you information about this. Your child’s age is calculated as his/her age on the 31st of July for Indian, Pakistani and Japanese curriculum schools, or 31st December for other curricula.
Here is an age-grade table to help you understand where your child is likely to fit in.
|For curriculums start on April|
Age by 31st of July
|For curriculums start on September|
Pre-Primary / FS1
KG1 / FS2
KG2 / Year 1
Grade 1 / Year 2
Age by 31st of December
Please note that every school’s assessment and admission criteria applies in addition to the age-grade table provided above. Once your child has been accepted in a school, the school will need to complete the admission formalities with KHDA. They will ask you for a copy of your child’s passport and residence visa if you are a non-Emirati, a copy of the birth certificate if the passport does not give the exact date of birth, a passport-size photograph and attested certificates and/or transfer certificate if registering in Grade 2 or above.
To help you choose from the many private schools in Dubai, you can click here to visit our online directory. One can browse all the schools from there using the available filters. You can look for schools by curriculum, fee range, location and performance. You can also download the KHDA app on your smart phone and do the same.
Schools have their own requirements and payment schedules regarding the payment of fees. School fees are regulated by KHDA – you can find out more about these here.
